Yes, when a train goes past it opens and the guard comes out. But the door hits on the arm holding the lamp and will not close. The arm holding the lamp is not like the 40-50's models as its fixed in place and does not move. Nor does the lamp swing. The only quick fix. Other than sending it back is to turn the man so far that he is facing almost completely to the left when he comes out. Not straight forward.Lionel has long need better quality control. A good start would be to restart making things in the U.S. and not in China.Member TCA

I received the Polar Express Gateman and like everyone else......could not get it to work. The gateman light would turn on but the gateman initially either stayed outside or inside but he never did what he was supposed to do. I followed the directions of another customer and took out the silver bar and it still did not work even though he was correct in saying this (confirmed by Lionel customer service). I spoke to Lionel today after watching various videos and checking out the train forums because I could not figure out the problem. After confirming I had removed the silver bar, they suggested turning the two 5" side pieces with the break in the track to the opposite side of where you plug in the gatemen to the activator pack (which is opposite what the directions tell you to do). I guess Amazon got a batch of these that the factory put in something opposite of what they should have (a quality control issue for Lionel, not Amazon). After hours of working on this, the gateman works like a charm. The light stays on continuously when the train is running and the gateman appears when the train goes by. As a follow up, I attached a second moving accessory to this set up and it did not work until I turned the 2 five inch side pieces back to the same side as where you plug it in, so the gateman is the only accessory you need to turn these side pieces opposite of what the directions say. The downside to this is that you need an activator set dedicated to this one accessory (there is a plug you can buy that lets you add up to 3 accessories). You can add accessories with lights, but not another moving accessory that relies on the train to trigger the motion.

You need special track pieces for the animation to work.

My grandfather gave me all his trains before he passed many years ago. Every Christmas we set up the trains the same as we did when I was a child. Every year I buy a couple of things to improve the set up under the tree. This year I bought the Area 51 search tower and a plug and play activator track. The tower ran all the time and was not activated by the train. In the attached photo you can see one of my old activator tracks, below is the new one. As you can see they (China) left the silver tie bar between the outer rails. This makes it a regular straight track. Remove the tie bar and everything works fine. I figured I can't be the only one out there that has this problem. I hope this helps! Happy Trains!review image
