I first used the roaster on the medium setting and had no issues. The following day (roaster well-cooled), I attempted a dark roast. Despite the same location next to my stove vent fan, the second roast produced A LOT of smoke, triggering my smoke alarm (and leaving an acrid smell in my house for a week). After it cooled, I noticed that the top had split and partially melted. I dare not use it again!

I want my money back! I've roasted 3 batches now and the toxic smell that emanates from this thing is overpowering. I don't know if it's burning plastic or solvents that weren't removed during manufacturing. Whatever it is, it smells downright dangerous.Second complaint is the roast buttons (Medium & Dark) either don't go off or are timed WAY too long. I've had to manually stop the thing every time I've used it.The shame is that it's not essentially a bad design. Husk collection works well. Some neat features but the seriously need to fix the obvious bugs.

I started off roasting in a popcorn popper, so anything that automatically applies heat and automatically turns off is amazing. My old roaster was a nice automatic one that I found at a thrift store and the thing I loved about it was that it had more dials adjust the roast of the exact beans I had. This one has two options; medium and dark roast. If you can find that one of those roasts your beans perfectly than everything's all good. I found that the power is in generally a little low, meaning that the medium roast is pretty light and the dark roast is pretty medium. I tend to like a more medium roast so it's fine, but I am worried that as I try different kinds of beans, I might find one that needs to be a bit darker than this thing will allow.BUT I'm still very happy with this roaster. I love how the chaff is collected, which makes it really easy to throw away when you're batch-roasting. The cooldown is sufficient to let you just keep rolling after the previous batch was roasted. On my second day of roasting I did drop the lid and immediately broke the handle. It's holding once glued back together but it does remind me that it's still relatively cheap so I would advise being a little careful with it.Full Disclosure: I received this product as part of the Amazon Vine program, but my review is entirely my own and not altered at all by my participation in the Vine program.
