This tester is functional and works well. The sensitivity could be better though as wires in a loom are hard to isolate the actual wire with the signal. Higher sensitivity would help that problem. The tester is very easy to use and has proven to be accurate. For the price, this is a good tester for the DIYer who only occasionally needs this and doesn't need or want to invest into a more expensive set.

The Intendvison automotive cable tracer and open/short finder , includes 2- 9V batterys and simple open/short tester , the tracer receiver and a black case for both. The open/short finder works well and takes more than 5K ohms to signal an open in the wire ! The cable tracer ( MY6814-R) states that it has a bandwidth of 100-300KHZ , however the tone created by the open/short & tone unit produces a 2Khz 50% duty cycle on/off test tone. The tracer unit has a volume control , but lacks any kind of sensitivity adjustments. !During the cable tracer test on 2 vehicles, I was not able to clearly identify the test wire when they were bundled together and found out that it required a separation of at least 1/2' to actually trace the correct wire. That's where the sensitivity adjustment comes in to correctly identify wires in close proximity!Considering the selling price, and lack of sensitivity adjustment , plus direct comparison to other competitive wire tracers, I can only provide a 3-star rating for this product.

seems to work. it took me a while to figure it out. the sender sends a 30khz signal into the wire in question. the receiver works like an antenna. when its over a live wire it lights up, if there is a wire break it will go dark. hence you can find a broken wire or more likely a bad connector.

This little tool turned what was about to be a full scale electrical meltdown into a relativly easy afternoon project. The probe is designed like some sort of wizard wand which made hunting down cables in tight spots feel like I was on a treasure hunt but less exciting and more sweaty. The LED light is a lifesaver because apparently, car interiors are dark places no matter how many shop lights I have & flashlights I bring. I managed to locate a short circuit by having someone flexing some wires while listening for that delightful change in receiver tone though it also became a lesson in not dropping it into unreachable spots(think wrist strap). It’s great at pinpointing breaks and shorts without destroying the cable insulation so my car didn’t end up looking like mice chewed up colorful spaghetti. This tool has spared me from cursing the inventor of wiring harnesses any more than necessary. It’s not magic but it sure felt like it.
