Krazy Island Shih Tzu

I have a little 10lb Shih Tzu that should really only be 8lbs but she's gained weight with old age. She's always had knee problems, but now that she's a senior dog she benefits from the support of these knee braces. I ordered them in a size small and they fit her pretty well. She has little tiny legs and an extra small would be a better fit, but these work well enough. They provide her with the stability to get around without her back legs buckling under her when she gets excited and tries to move fast, run, or play with our younger dogs. She doesn't know she's an old lady and these knee braces keep her up and having fun.

I have an 18 year old yellow lab, who's has good body composition, and is in decent health for her age, but has arthritis more or less all over. She is getting to the point that she is having a hard time standing on her own, and I was hoping that getting these might aide in giving her weak joints some support. While she seemed to appreciate their brief support, they became loose and started to slip out of place after a few minutes. I checked to make sure that they were on the correct leg and oriented in the correct direction. I followed the graphic for how to properly position these on the joint, and they just wouldn't stay in place long enough to be of much use.

I decided to give these a try for my almost 2 year old Great Pyrenees/Bernese Mountain Dog mix, who has hip dysplasia in both hips. Because of her hip dysplasia, both of her rear hocks are hyperextended, which make them appear straight, or even bowing forward. Her hocks also feel a bit loose, so I've thought about trying hock braces for a little while now, to see if they give her added support and stability. I ordered a size medium based on her measurements, and they seem to fit her well. She weighs about 80lbs for reference. These braces are soft and durable. The quality seems really nice, and they feel like they will last a very long time. I love how adjustable they are, and how stretchy the straps are. After seeing these in person, the braces do seem a bit smaller/shorter in length than they look in the listing photos, which I was a little surprised to see. I am not sure how critical it is to use them on the correct leg, it's hard to tell by looking at them which brace is for which leg. They do have a tag labeled on the inside of each, which is nice, however the tags aren't sewn in very well, and one of them fell off while adjusting the brace on my dogs leg. If the other ends up falling off as well, a will not be able to easily tell which is which. I like the design of these braces with the ring shaped cushion, however I don't find it to help hold the brace up on my dogs leg and keep it from slipping (assuming that's what the listing meant by non-slip ring shaped cushion). I actually did struggle with these sliding down and not staying in place long term. I tried adjusting them tighter and tighter, but don't want to make them too tight on her. She also seemed annoyed by them and tried to pull them off a couple of times, however she has not worn them for extended periods of time yet, so she still needs to get used to them. I also didn't notice a major difference in her hock joint while wearing them as she was supposed to. I did play around with placing them on backwards. It may have helped her issue a little bit more than the proper way, but it's hard to say. I will also note that these did not come with any instructions in/on the box, so I needed to look up the listing to see the proper way of putting them on her. I will also note that they have a bit of a strong smell to them, which I am assuming will fade with time. I am still rating these braces 4 stars based on the quality. I wasn't necessarily expecting them to work for my dog, and don't fault them for not helping her much. These did not claim to help her specific issue, so I do not fault these braces because of that. She likely needs stiffer braces with more stability, if I choose to try others. I still wanted to give these a shot because of the opportunity to try these for free, and get a better understanding of what will work for her. If you are looking at these braces for hyperextended hocks, these may not be the best option for your dog. However, if your dog has one of the other issues included in this listing, and you are looking for braces to try at a good price, I do recommend giving these a shot. They have some nice features such as they are able to be frozen for icing, and are good quality. Just be aware of the sliding issue, and that they may require some additional assistance staying in place.

The medium size braces were perfect for my almost 17-year-old Lab mix Lexus. She is starting to have significant issues with her back legs while walking and now it's affecting her by trying to stand up as well. It breaks my heart every single day and I wish I could do more for her but for now it's medicine and these braces and a lot of bending over helping her up physically. The braces are incredibly good for supporting her while she is standing up and walking but they do slide down a lot and I put them at the tightest I can. The medium is the perfect size because if I go with a small, they will not fit and if I go with a large, they will be too big. But when I first put them on and for a nice little bit, they work wonders. I am not kidding. It's night and day while wearing and not wearing these braces. If you get them and they tend to stay on a lot better, then they do with my dog then you will see the wonders they do for your special family member. Even though they slide down after a bit I can still stand behind them 100% without any question at all. They work at a 5 STAR LEVEL. My 4 STAR review is just because of the sliding down but that could be a minor defect just in the pair I got. Get them if your dog needs help and don't even think about it, just do it.
